ONLINE: Environmental Crisis in the Indian Ocean World: Past-to-Present Patterns

Friday, September 10, 2021
12 PM to 1 PM EDT

The future of human societies is inextricably tied to our ability to adapt to global crises. In the COVID-19 pandemic, that has meant instituting public health measures and quickly developing effective vaccines. But that kind of concerted, adaptive response has not been seen yet with climate change, arguably the greatest threat to human well-being and the environment. The ever-growing risks include rising sea levels, increasingly intense droughts, famine, conflict over natural resources, and migration. The impacts of flooding, for example, are far reaching and will affect millions of people in the next two decades.

Join us for a compelling panel discussion about the effects of climate change on monsoon-afflicted regions in the Indian Ocean world. Learn how the Indian Ocean World Centre (IOWC) at McGill uses transformative research that will significantly enhance environmental policy and resilience strategies at local, regional, and state levels within the Indian Ocean world.

Moderator:
-Philip Gooding, Postdoctoral fellow at the Indian Ocean World Centre and a Course Lecturer in the History and Classical Studies department at McGill University.

Featuring:
- Gwyn Campbell, Director, Indian Ocean World Centre, McGill University
- Vinita Damodaran, Director of the Centre for World Environmental History at the University of Sussex, and specialist on South Asia
