Butter follows journalist Rika Machida through her investigation of convicted serial killer Manako Kajii, notorious for luring wealthy men to pay for her expensive cooking classes, only to murder them. Kajii refuses to cooperate with the press until Rika writes her a letter asking for her recipe for beef stew. The ensuing correspondence and series of meetings is closer to a masterclass in cooking than journalistic research. As Rika delves deeper, she transforms physically and mentally, gaining weight and confidence, and exploring the complexities of the female experience in contemporary Japan.
